This is an operation to remove the thick cords and lumps that form in the palm as a result of Dupuytren’s contracture. A zig zag shaped cut is made along the affected fingers and the nerves and blood vessels that supply the fingers are gently freed from any surrounding contracture tissue. Occasionally other procedures may be required at the same time, such as an open release of one of the bent finger joints, or a skin graft.
Surgery is usually performed as a day case.
The operation is very good at improving the amount that the hand can open, however it does not cure the condition. A small number of patients will require a repeat operation at some time later (often many years).
